Food Drive Fills the Gap!

April 23-27

Our council and our Girl Scout troops are participating in the Second Annual KHQ Food Drive, the week of April 23-27. We want to “fill the bins to the brim” by collecting 100 pounds of food a day all week. Please bring your non-perishable food items to the Spokane Program Center and help us help our communities! At the end of the week, the girls will have the opportunity to deliver the food to one of the seven local Yoke’s Fresh Market locations.

Specific items needed include things that kids can prepare themselves: tuna, mac & cheese, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, soup, fruit cups, trail mix, cereal bars and healthy snacks.

The food will be distributed by Second Harvest Food Bank and Northwest Harvest. Girl Scouts from outside of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area will collect food to deliver to their local food banks to benefit Northwest Harvest, the only statewide food relief agency. This is a Take Action project for Girl Scouts in support of community needs.

The statistics are startling: one out of every four children in Spokane County is hungry or at risk of hunger. One in four children. Our children are hungry.

According to Second Harvest Food Bank, of those Spokane kids facing food shortages at home, 37 percent likely are ineligible for federal nutrition programs because their household income falls above the required poverty threshold.

Almost 47 percent of schoolchildren (elementary through high school) throughout Spokane County receive free and reduced-price school meals.
